Activewear: Leather Weightlifting Belts
June 22, 2008 – 12:36 pmLeather weightlifting belts are used by a large number of people who participate in weight training. The basic idea behind wearing a belt is to provide support for the muscles of both the lower back and the abdomen. While using lighter weights, most healthy people probably dont need a belt, but the extra support is good insurance for heavier lifting.
Leather Weightlifting Belts Provide Support
Some people, me included, wear their belt throughout their workout. In my own case, the belt mostly serves as a reminder to keep my abs firm and posture straight regardless of what Im doing in the gym. Whenever I can feel the belt against by stomach, I know my posture is not correct. Then, when the time comes to do heavier lifting, like squats, I cinch the belt tighter to provide maximum support.
There are those who feel that the use of leather weightlifting belts is not a good idea. Their concern is that the belts may not be as effective as most weightlifters assume them to be. As a result, they feel that injuries can result from people relying on their belts to protect them, even if they lift too much weight and/or use poor technique.
Most people, though, consider leather weightlifting belts to be a valuable accessory. You can match the belt to your personal needs; the wider and thicker the belt, the more support it provides. You can also select from a variety of colors and smooth or suede textures.
